Preventing Aspirated Pneumonia

If you have a puppy that has milk coming out of its nose, the next breath will bring some milk into the lungs. That milk spoils at body temperature. When you hear the term aspirated pneumonia or bacterial pneumonia—that is how it starts.

Prevention early beats heroics late.

When you first see milk at the nose, use a bulb syringe or Delee mucus trap to get some of the milk out right away. Nebulize just like this for 5 minutes. Hand held nebulizer in a far corner from the sensor, oxygen running at the recommended flow rate and pointed away from the sensor. Wait an hour to let the saline do its job. Then use a Delee Mucus trap or bulb syringe. Repeat 3-4 more times. Aspirated pneumonia is largely preventable.
