Preventing Aspiration Pneumonia in Puppies
Share
If you have a puppy that inhaled milk or other substances into the lungs, this can lead to a type of pneumonia known as aspirated or bacterial pneumonia. If you notice milk coming out of your puppy's nose, it's important to take immediate action to prevent this from happening. Here's what you can do: Use a bulb syringe or Delee mucus trap to remove some of the milk from the nose. Then nebulize for 5 minutes using a handheld nebulizer placed in the incubator away from the sensor, with oxygen at the recommended flow rate. Wait for an hour to let the saline do its job, and then use a Delee Mucus trap or bulb syringe again. Repeat this process 3-4 times. By taking these preventive measures, you can significantly reduce the risk of aspiration pneumonia. Prevention early beats heroics late. Aspirated pneumonia is largely preventable.
